Executive Director Leadership Opportunity

Overview

As one of California’s oldest agencies serving abuse survivors, the Family Violence Law Center (FVLC) is recognized as a leader in the Bay Area delivering exceptional services and advocating for long-term change for victims. We are a dedicated group of staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds – attorneys, psychologists, advocates and community members – who together work towards a shared vision of a future without domestic violence. Our holistic approach integrates comprehensive protection and prevention services for abuse survivors with efforts to address and change barriers for survivors within the legal, health, education and criminal justice systems. For more detailed information on the organization, programs and values, visit http://fvlc.org/about/what-we-do.

Leadership Opportunity

FVLC is seeking an influential and inspiring nonprofit leader with a strong commitment to social justice. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of attracting and sustaining public and private funding as well as strong communication and financial management skills. The incoming Executive Director will bring creativity, inspiration and flexibility to his or her work. Candidates should feel comfortable working in a fast paced organization with a diverse group of community stakeholders and clients. Cultural competence and an understanding of the root causes of domestic violence are critical.

The next several years at FVLC will provide both a creative and highly visible leadership opportunity in Alameda County. Starting with established programs, talented staff, dedicated Board, and supportive community partners, the next Executive Director will help FVLC sustain its holistic continuum of programs while focusing its strategic direction toward the broader impact of social change and justice as we work to end domestic violence in Alameda County.

The Executive Director works in partnership with a 10-15 member Board which is organized into working committees. Balancing internal management with external impact and visibility, the Executive Director oversees daily operations while working to achieve major strategic objectives. The position supervises the Director of Programs and three administrative managers and works cohesively with the Center’s 21 staff and 10-15 volunteers.

FVLC operates with an estimated budget of $1.6M derived from a mix of single and multi-year grant commitments and strong funder relationships. Approximately 69% of the budget revenue comes from local and regional government grants, 27% from foundations, and 4% from individuals and events.
FVLC has been privileged to receive foundation funding over the last two years to support succession planning to thoughtfully plan for this leadership transition. During this period, significant time and resources have gone into development of a new management team that is well positioned to ensure stability and integration of core program services. In addition funding has been obtained to help with on-boarding and to provide coaching support for the Executive Director.

This is a full-time, exempt position based in downtown Oakland, minutes from BART. Offices are located within the Alameda County Family Justice Center, a one-stop center of organizations supporting families experiencing domestic violence and other issues.

Essential Skills/Experience

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following skills and experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years successful senior management experience in a nonprofit or public organization of similar size and scope
  • Fund-raising experience with a successful track record in attracting and maintaining individual, government and foundation support
  • Passion for and knowledge of the issues and trends affecting individuals, families and children who are victims of violence or in crisis
