Computer & Internet Safety

How Safe is Safe?

If you are in an abusive relationship, you might be concerned about browsing the internet for information about how to escape your situation. Even looking for a new job can sometimes be dangerous. If this is true for you, or someone you know, there are many more options available today than there were just a few years ago.

The Safest Option – A Separate Computer

By far the safest way to browse the internet is to do so from a separate computer, out of the reach of your abuser. If you don’t have access to a computer at work or at a friend’s home, your local library offers free internet access. Internet cafes provide internet access for a small fee. You might be able to talk to a friend or co-worker who could help you look for helpful resources on the internet.

Safer Internet Browsing

The next safest option for browsing the internet are using the “private browsing” setting and using a separate browser. If possible, combining both provides compounded protection.

Using a Separate Browser

Browsers allow users to access internet content, by reading or “parsing” the language of internet files. Most people use one browser to do this, but it is possible to have multiple browsers installed and used on your computer. Browsers like Firefox, Chrome and Opera, are free and easy to download and install. Browser Alternatives

The Private Browsing Option

“Private browsing” is a browser setting or “mode” that makes a session of browsing private and can be turned off and on. While it is commonly used to hide “x-rated” internet use, it has some real value in protecting victims. Private browsing is not foolproof, however, and should be undertaken with an understanding of its limitations. More on Private Browsing

BOTTOM LINE

Only you can determine what degree of computer safety is required for your situation. If your abuser is highly computer savvy, maximum caution should be taken, as there is no way to make a computer totally safe.

None of these options provide total or long term protection. Getting and staying informed is your best strategy for computer and internet safety.
